Ok, I really do not like to move it. And by move it, I mean moving where I live. But one would think that I love it looking at my track record. Since 2001, when I graduated high school, I have moved a total of 12 times. No joke. That is 12 times in 8 years!
My roommate and myself agreed some time ago that we would live together another year. I silently celebrated to myself how refreshing it would be to not move this one year. No boxes, no moving men, no bothering friends to help. Just enjoy staying put!
Then my roommate threw out that she heard the apartment complex next door was way cheaper than ours. I quickly reminded her that the cost of moving would probably even all of that out in the end. I also reminded her that I own the majority of the furniture in our apartment and I didn't have family in town to help me move. In which she swore she'd move my stuff herself if it was cheaper, but you know that wouldn't ever really happen. Let her just forget about that other apartment being cheaper, I thought. Just to further the feeling of wanting to stay I encouraged hanging all the pictures in our apartment that we never did. She won't still want to move if we've just done all this work to our apartment, no way!
Then came the poor job by the management of our complex to renew our lease. I knew our lease was up sometime this month. Every apartment complex I've ever lived in has come to me way in advance to let you know of that exact date and what the procedure would be if staying or leaving. We hadn't heard anything from them. So when I went to turn in our rent I asked them when was the exact ending date of our lease and what did we need to do if we wanted to renew. May 22nd was our final day and she said she'd put it on her manager's desk to get back with us about renewing.
A week and a half went by. Nothing. So I called them. The manager talked to me and said something about having to email the VP of the management company about our prices, she'd call when she heard something.
Another week went by. So I went to the office. I explained the situation again because, of course, every time I go to that place there is someone new working. She looked it up and said it was still in the works. By this point I just wanted to know if they expected us to be moved out by that date. So I asked what happened if we didn't sign a new lease before our old one ended, they informed me nothing would happen. It would be a month-to-month lease at that point and at the same rate we currently have. Ok, so we weren't expected to be gone, but it is still annoying they can't get us our new lease. It's almost as if they don't want people to keep living in their complex.
So by this point my roommate was real frustrated and threatening to go look at the next door complex. I reminded her of what a pain that would be, but told her she could do whatever she wanted.
So this past Friday, May 22nd, the day our lease was up; I called them again. The new girl working said her manager was out on the property and put me on hold while she contacted her. She said the manager would contact me as soon as she got a chance. Really, I've heard that one before.
While I was holding my breath waiting on that phone call I got an email from my roommate (cause lets face it, we were doing all this while we were each at work). And she had talked to the complex next door, they had a two bedroom apartment with rent that was $250 less than ours! And they have movers that are contracted through them and if they moved us in less than 3 hours the complex would pay for the whole thing! Wow...well that took care of my biggest concern. So I agreed to go look.
So we met to look at the place. They got slammed just after we came in so we waited on the couch. After the lady was done handling all the people she took us on our tour. She asked if we had recognized one of the ladies that came in. No we hadn't but she said that it was the manager from our current complex. She came in to handle some business because she is moving into this other complex! That's interesting she would go live in the other complex rather than the one she manages. So I talked with the manager of this new place. Turns out when I called my complex earlier and the girl radioed the manager, she was at this place talking about leasing from them. This new manager knew everything about our situation because she had asked the lady all sorts of questions after hearing what was radioed. She thought it was crazy they hadn't given us a new lease to sign.
Well when all was said and done we walked out of that place and agreed to live there. So I'll be moving starting next weekend! Yay...lucky number 13, right?
Oh... and the original complex FINALLY called me back. Just as I was walking into the new complex. They said they'd have our lease ready to be signed the next day. Instead, we went and signed a 30-day notice to leave. But I was a little satisfied that they finally got some of the work they promised done. Serves them right that I didn't sign it.
Moving is the WORST!!!!
