I'm Not Even Mad
Usually it is tough going there and having to deal with not being able to communicate at all through my phone. But I've got to be honest, I am not mad that I won't be able to call or text people for 7 days. Maybe it's because I have become so accustomed to it or maybe it's because I have been over doing it lately (especially since eHarmony has come around).
My phone contract even ran out at the beginning of this month and I thought about getting onto the one phone service that does work there. But I wanted the break. This might backfire in my face by the end of my trip and I might be dying for my phone to have service again. But I doubt it.
I do have internet access there. But not wireless and it is a bit of a hassle to get internet. I might blog and get on facebook, but then again, I might not. I will probably check my email at least every few days (I can't cut myself off from the world entirely).
The thought of letting all that stuff go for a few days does make me happy. Just sitting back and enjoying the company of family without any interruptions sounds like the best Christmas present I could get!
But I do want to wish everyone a very wonderful Christmas! Whether I keep up with your every move, every day, may not happen. But I will catch up with you later. May you find a day of rest from the technology in your world...if you can handle it. It's taken years of training for myself to be okay, and now, I'm not even mad!

Eye Doctor Rant
Before I even had a blog, I was thinking about the things I wanted to write about every time I go to the eye doctor. I don't know if it's me, the doctor (I had never been to the eye doctor without my mom before this one, so I didn't really pay attention), or if the eye doctor is just not my thing. But every time I go, I am so glad when I leave and I can't believe what went down while I was there.
First, let me set the tone. I am probably to the point where without my contacts I am legally blind. I am far beyond seeing the big "E." That came and went over ten years ago.
When they make me take my contacts out, I am a lost soul. I just gaze off in the darkness waiting for the next "event" they have planned for me. I am pretty sure there are people across the room pointing and laughing at how hilarious and lost I look.
But I would never know.
Now, let me start with sharing a story from two years ago at the eye doctor. One of the girls that worked there was sitting down with me and I was trying on two different pairs of contacts. She gave me the second pair and immediately after I put it in I couldn't see. I panicked and immediately said, "it's like I am seeing twice what I should be!" The lady couldn't figure it out. Finally, I did. I had put the second pair in without taking the first one out. So I was wearing two contacts, therefore actually seeing twice what I should be.
Talk about embarrassing. I've never in my life done that (then again, who would be like, "I can see but lets put another contact in."). But to do it at the eye doctor's office, that might have been a first.
So tonight I was there and the lady put me on a machine. First, I am terrified of the machine that shoots air at your eye. So I sat there blinking about twice every second thinking this might be the machine that does that. She finally realized this and said, "this isn't the one that shoots air at your eye, you can relax."
Thanks. You should probably tell me that every time I am at a machine that doesn't shoot air at my eye.
Unless I am at the one that does. Then lie, especially if you want this done in a timely fashion.
But I went into the room with the eye doctor. One of the first things he says to me is, "well you aren't the person with the worst vision I've seen today." Which I guess was supposed to make me feel better about how blind I am. But instead it made me think, "so since no eye doctor has ever said that to me before, I should assume that I usually am the most blind person they'd seen that day?"
AND...since he even made that comment, I can assume that between me and the other blind guy, that we are at the top of a very short list of "the worst vision patients" this doctor has. We might even be the top two, and just so happened to have come in the same day!
How sad for my eyes. Never knew I was the most blind person the eye doctor's see on a typical day.
One of the things that racks my nerves to no end about the eye doctor is the part where they ask you if it's "better here or here." My eye doctor actually does this pretty well (it's not always 1 or 2, he goes to 10 then goes to letters. I like the variety.), it's just that I take it too seriously. This is my vision at stake. I often ask for repeats until he reminds me that I can just say that they look the same. I often think, "what if he's making me go in circles just to see if I really know what I'm talking about?" Like this is some psychological exam to see if I am crazy and just say whatever to just get an answer out. And what if he is going in repeats and I am constantly coming up with different answers? All of these type scenarios keep going through my head the entire time and make me nearly go crazy. As you can see, I take that exam WAY TOO SERIOUS...OBVIOUSLY.
So we get to the portion where they dilate your eyes. In the history of my eye exams, I have had my eyes dilated, I think, twice. The only reason being, every eye doctor looks at my eyes and says, "you have the biggest pupils I've ever seen! Do you have night vision?"
Maybe. But I can't see the big "E," so I can't see any of the stuff whether its night or day anyways, so I wouldn't really know.
But I'm not going to lie, I take not having to get those drops as a personal success. It's the one thing my eye's have going for them! Big pupils!
(In actuality, I don't think there is any actual gain to this. But I like to imagine there is.)
As he did the test, he was putting his hands in different places and instructing me to look in those directions. At one point, he told me three times in a row to look at his hand. And I was. Then he was like, "my other hand that I am waving." But he added, "I know you can't see that well."
Well maybe you shouldn't wear a shirt that is the same color as your skin. Especially on the day you see the two most blind people you have. We have little to go by as it is. And when you wave any color in front of the same color, we can't see it!
If it wasn't for the existence of dentists, I am pretty sure I would deem the eye doctor as the "King of Cruel and Unusual Punishment." Though, I don't embarrass myself at the dentist office. It is just cruel the actual physical torture they put you through there. But the dentist's office rant is something I will have to share with you another day...

That Was Unexpected
We were originally supposed to go to a movie. But I needed us to go to it earlier in the evening because I wanted to go to Emily's husband's band's show that was last night. Then, he remembered he had a Christmas party to go to beforehand. After I mentioned the reason why we needed to do the date earlier, he was all about going to the show.
I was not all about it, because that meant introducing him to a bunch of people and I didn't know him that well. Plus, they were playing at Emo's, which I was pretty sure was not his typical scene (and it's not mine either, I just didn't want him to think that it was).
So because of all of this, I kept trying to give him several outs for not going to the show. Things like, "I don't really have to go because I see them all the time," or "we could probably still make a movie before the show" and several "are you sure you want to go to this show?" But he pressed on about wanting to go. So I figured he must know what he was getting into and felt comfortable about it, so then let's do it.
Fifteen minutes after he was supposed to be there, I texted and asked, "are you still coming?" His response, "I'm a little lost." I did already give him the instructions that it was on the corner of 6th and Red River. Maybe he needed a little more. So I put, "Red River is just west of I-35. Emo's is on the northeast corner of Red River from 6th."
About 20-30 more minutes goes by. The show starts and finally he walks in. But now it's too loud to really talk.
When the show was over we all go outside (so we can hear each other). And I introduce him to people. There really wasn't ever more that two or three people talking with us at a time. And it was at maximum, five people. So I don't think it would be too intimidating. But he barely ever talked (and I can deal with that, I have situations where that happens to me). But when he does talk, he wouldn't look at ANYONE. I am serious, he was looking at the trees above our heads as he talked. It was the kind of behavior that almost made my teacher self come out and start waving my arms (to teach the kids to look at the person they are addressing. But seriously, I don't ever have to even do that to sixth graders, they already know that!).
He bought himself and me a beer (asked if the other two girls would like one). Then went back to the bar 20 minutes later just to close his tab. So I thought, I guess he's going to leave and is just preparing himself for that. But he didn't leave. (Maybe he thought we were all going to leave? I don't know, I was confused.)
At the end of the evening, I really didn't learn anything new about him (besides that his dog's head is really big...not the riveting information I was needing on this date). But that was just because we were talking with a group of people the whole time. Which is why I didn't want to do that. But he pretty much insisted that is what we do! And yet, he didn't seem to be at all comfortable with it.
My friends asked if I would go out with him again. I think I would probably give him another chance, because it may have been completely different from what he was expecting and was out of his comfort zone. But he may never ask to go on a date again. I haven't heard anything from him since. And I am honestly not upset by that. I think it was weird that he was so insistent about going there and then obviously didn't know what it was really going to be like.
Our first date was nothing like this one. No staring at trees or seeming aloof. That was definitely unexpected!

Dreams Vs. Reality
I asked where my gifts were and they pointed to a pile of un-wrapped gifts. I asked why they were un-wrapped and they said that they just couldn't wait to find out what I had gotten (which is funny because they would be the people that bought the gifts. But lets not be overly critical, it is a dream.).
Then I started going through my pile and realized that a bunch of the stuff was clothes I was giving my nieces. Somehow there must have been a mix up on who those were to go to (though, once again, I wouldn't think it'd take a genius to figure out I don't wear a 2 or 3T). So when I separated the stuff out, I was left with just one gift. A really cool all-in-one make-up set from some nice make-up store (even in my dreams I can't come up with a great brand name). I asked who gave me it, and my sister-in-law said she and my brother. But she said that they didn't know what to get me, but Rachelle was with them and she recommended that (thanks Rachelle, you are even helpful in my dreams!).
But then I asked, what did my mom get me? And they answered that she didn't get me anything. I even went and asked my mom and she said she didn't get me anything. No, "oh I'm sorry" or anything. Just, "yeah, I didn't get you anything." So I got mad about that but only to be interrupted by my brother to remind me that I had set up an appointment across the street to go try on wedding dresses (I don't know anyone that lives across the street from such a shop, but cool!). So then it dawned on me, maybe my mom's gift was to buy my wedding dress (though I wish dream mom would have told me that because it caused a lot of dream stress)???
Anyways, my mom, brother, Emily (she jumped in here now), and my sister-in-law go to the wedding dress shop. When you walked inside, it looked like Lowe's and had people everywhere. Unfortunately, none of those people were people that could help us to try on dresses (why can't dreams just be good things with no problems or obstacles?). So we left in hopes that an hour later it would be less crowded for us to return.
Then I woke up to my phone getting a text message from Emily. She said, "Ummm, did you see Ryan's fb status for today?" I just knew that it was going to be that he had proposed. So I naturally ran to my computer and saw this as his message, "Michelle and I are now officially Mr. and Mrs. Howard! Oh, and did I tell you we are expecting a little one in the summer?!! How 'bout them apples?"
Well, engaged...married....it's all the same in the end.
Then my phone rang. It was my sister-in-law asking what I wanted for Christmas (thank goodness because that is where the root of my present nightmare stemmed from, no one asking yet what I wanted). So I got the scoop on the wedding first, it was just them and the minister. Bigger wedding will be later, not sure when.
But I thought it was funny. I dreamed about engagements and gift nightmares. It's like my dream was preparing me for what I was going to wake up to.
Which, funny enough, I did add to the list of things I wanted a make-up gift card. I'd take the actual set that was in my dream, if Rachelle, you actually know of where it really exists...haha!

It's Like the Bachelorette...Minus the Drama!
I am referring to my experiences on eHarmony, of course (I don't know why I say of course, not like you would automatically think that).
First, let me say that I have a greater appreciation for the person that goes on the Bachelor/Bachelorette. Because before I respond on eHarmony to anyone's communication I have to refresh my memory on them and what we've talked about. And I am dealing with less men in a longer time span. How they do it, I will never know (well until one writes a tell-all book...which I am anxiously awaiting)!
Last night I kicked off the first official date eHarmony produced. We went and grabbed a few drinks at Opal Divine's Restaurant. If you think I wasn't nervous going into that situation, you'd be crazy. In fact, my last words to my roommate before I left was, "Remember, the name of the place is OPAL DIVINE'S! Because when you are filling out the missing person's report, I want you to have my last known location right!"
(Not that I thought there was anything strange about this guy, I just am still sceptical about meeting someone normal on the Internet.)
But in all actuality, the date went just fine. In fact I remember thinking to myself, I think I could actually see myself with this guy. There were LOTS of things I am looking for in a partner. There were also a few that I wasn't looking for, but none that I would say are complete deal breakers. Before the end of the date, he had already asked me to a second date for Saturday night, so that is good!
Guy number two I've talked to on the phone. I am a little worried he might not be on eHarmony for all the right reasons. He just kinda gives me the "ladies man" vibe (for no more of a reason than he was honest with me about going on a date with another girl the next night. I am pretty sure all of us on eHarmony are doing that, it's just the way he laid it out there with ease.). His work is a little iffy (is that a word?). But even with all the writing back and forth and talking on the phone, it's hard to REALLY read someone. So I'm still giving him a chance, he does seem like a good guy.
Guy number three I am still just writing eHarmony guided emails back and forth. I have found a lot of similarities with him (not necessarily the compatibility kind though). He went to A&M, his sister was in my sorority (younger, and I didn't remember her, but Chelsea and Erin did) and he grew up not far from where I would go with Emily's family as kid when they went to their hunting lease. I'm not sure we are the best match, I think we might have a bit of different lifestyles. But his is definitely for the better, so I like that!
There are others I am communicating with, but we are still on the guided communication. And lets be honest, in guided communication, you really can't tell much about someone, no matter how much eHarmony does to try to spice it up! I just want to end this by sharing some of the ridiculous questions eHarmony provides for you to send the other person during the guided communication stages (that guy number 1 and I were making fun of last night).
Here you go, the "quality compatibility matching system's" (their own words) questions:
- How would you describe your childhood relationship with your mother and/or father?
- Describe your parents relationship with each other.
- Tonight you can do anything you want, no penalties, no reprisals, and the cost is unimportant. What are you going to do?
- When do you feel most afraid?
- Describe some personal habits that are important to you.
- Does life look good to you right now? Describe your current emotional health. (that one is my favorite. It starts out like a decent question, then it gets deep, FAST.)
I just crack up at those questions in particular. I am pretty sure they stole all of those from a serious in-depth emotional well-being survey that was at a psychiatrist office. Seriously.
Thankfully, I have never had a match ask me any of those questions. Otherwise, they would be eliminated immediately.
And yes, I have eliminated someone due to their responses. I sent a question saying something like, "what sort of date sounds like the most fun to you?" This one had multiple choice answers with answers like; go to a romantic dinner, cook dinner, go see a movie or go to the local flee market. I don't know about you, but one of those seems like the obvious answer you immediately eliminate (kinda like the test taking skills I teach my kids, how to first eliminate the absurd one). But sure enough, some weirdo picked it. I mean, going to a romantic dinner would be AWKWARD.
I am kidding. That's not the one that I think should be eliminated immediately. But seriously, a guy did pick the flee market. Lets just say he got an invitation to "close match."
Well that is just about everything I think I needed to update on the whole eHarmony thing. I will try to keep everyone better updated!

Over The Top
I think this is where most people that receive this award insert a "Your Blog is Over The Top!" graphic. But since my computer is not allowing me to copy paste or save to ever be found again tonight, I am not. Check out the above blog if you are dying to see the graphic. I am usually not computer challenged, but today, I am.
But I too will pass the award along.
THE AWARD GOES TO....
Chelsea- with "The Life We Love." Chelsea and I met in college and were roommates/suite mates on and off for two years? She is still one of my great friends that I keep up with regularly. She has always had a very interesting blog with a twist of humor that I love. But lately her blog has taken a bit of a turn in direction, now focusing on updating everyone on her husband, Nick, as he battles cancer. With all that is going on in their lives, she still finds the time to write about their experiences so we can all be informed. So for this, your blog is over the top!
There are questions to answer and to pass on. But I don't even want you to go through answering these questions Chelsea. I know you answered some that were similar some time ago and you encouraged me to do the same when I started my blog. But I never did. But I also didn't forget. So look at this as a duel question answering session. One for the award and one as a late answer to a request a friend made!
(Keep in mind I am supposed to be only using one word answers, this is the best I can do!)
1. Where is your cell phone? On the table next to me.
2. Your hair? I need a hair cut!!!
3. Your mother? Where do I start? We'll just sum her up as stubborn.
4. Your father? Was a wonderful man that I wish everyone had gotten the chance to meet.
5. Your favorite food? Type- Mexican. Single "meal"- popcorn.
6. Your dream last night? I remember traveling and there was possibly a plane. If I would've known I was going to have to answer this question, I would've made more of a point to remember it!
7. Your favorite drink? Dr. Pepper
8. Your goal? Run a marathon? Write a book? Finally finish the book I'm reading? It changes by the day honestly...
9. What room are you in? Living room with all my Christmas decorations. If it wasn't for those, I'd probably be in my room writing this!
10. Your hobby? Running, knitting, reading, writing in my blog...
11. Your fear? Heights, Spiders, and that those people in the "Hillbilly Swimming Hole" will come alive and get me (see previous blog).
12. Where do you want to be in 6 years? Somewhere I am happy with my life and what I am doing with it.
13. Where were you last night? In this very same spot!
14. Something you aren't? Someone who is fake.
15. Muffins? This one time I had a cranberry orange muffin at Starbucks. They've never had it again (but then again, I've only been maybe 3 times since - that was like a year and a half ago). I'm not a HUGE fan of muffins by-the-way.
16. Wish list item? A million dollars? A billion? A trillion? Where do you draw the line on money when asking as a wish?
17. Where did you grow up? Texas mainly, but before that I lived in California.
18. Last thing you did? Ate the most delicious dinner my roommates boyfriend, Mitch, made. It was homemade tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.

27. Something your not wearing? shoes and make-up
28. Your favorite store? Target, Marshall's and HEB.

30. When was the last time you laughed? About 3 seconds ago, I am now watching Conan and there was just a comedian on.
31. Last time you cried? Today, but that was just because I found on my drive home my old "Sad Songs" CD. Which basically consists of the main song from every sad movie you've ever seen. It was like a mini cry fest on my way home. My original goal was to look for my old Christmas CD. Tomorrow I will stay more focused on the original task (and might throw the Sad Songs CD out the window)!
32. Your best friend? Well if you haven't read my previous blog, it's Emily and we just celebrated our 20 year anniversary. I'd say the winter of 1989 was a great time!

The end!

Twenty Year Anniversary!
What? That's not normal?
But we have been friends for 20 years, which means we met in first grade. I had just moved to Texas, and I met her my first day at my new school. And here we are 20 years later, and better friends than ever.
We wanted this to be ridiculous and absurd. Every celebration has specific things you do. So we decided the celebration for 20 years of friendship would be a pub crawl. So we sent out an evite and invited nearly everyone we knew. We treated every aspect of this like you would a real anniversary. We even decorated my apartment, where everyone from out of town stayed.
I want to also mention that I love my fireplace. My apartment has one of those where you just flip a switch and it turns on, it is soooo convenient. Almost a little too convenient!(And I may or may not have watched an entire movie today sitting in front of the fireplace.)
But Shannon, Allison and Brandon all came in town from Dallas for this occasion. Shannon and Allison stopped at a truck stop on the way in and bought us this fabulous present for the anniversary!
In case you have never seen this beautiful thing, it is figurines of a Hillbilly Swimming Hole. It has some real moving hair on the figurines and a naked bottom sticking out of the water. It screams class. And just to make it better, when we got back from the bars, we found that my roommate had hung it from the ceiling!
As you can see from this next picture, they put some nice looking hair on these figurines!
This was supposed to be a themed pub crawl, girls were supposed to wear wigs and guys were to wear mustaches. But at the last minute we decided to cancel that idea.
This was taken just after the UT game at Lavaca Street Bar. You could've heard a pin drop in that packed bar for those last few seconds of the game! It was a bit intense!
Emily still brought the mustaches she bought. It made for some great photos later in the night!
Not sure how this happened, but the placement of Dana's hand was totally accidental. She swears.

I took about a billion pictures last night. But the only one of just Emily and I, was this one. Not quite the framer I was looking for!

Here's some of the girls that were there last night. The thing about it being a pub crawl and the game going on last night, was that people would come and go at random different times through the night. So we never got a picture of everyone. In fact, I pretty much only pulled out my camera at this one bar, so I didn't even picture anyone that was at any of the other bars.

One last funny thing from last night. The last bar we went to last night was Logan's (though we had one more on the list, none of us could make it any longer...we might be getting too old for bar crawls). But we made a joke of my friends finding me a single guy. And sure enough, Shannon and Allison (or was it just Allison...things were getting a little fuzzy by that point) found a single guy. The best part, I spent the better part of probably 30 minutes (or however long I spent talking to him) telling this guy and every other person that would listen, how much he looked like Jacob. You know....teen heart-throb Jacob from the Twilight movie.

Mrs. McCreepy
Not that I am completely innocent. I am just as guilty of getting overly excited about the thought of snow.
But I still have a sense of reality, and I am still skeptical of whether or not it will actually snow tomorrow. And I really have no faith in school being cancelled or shortened because of it.
Though, I wouldn't be opposed.
Anyways, the thought of a possibility of snow made our school double check the phone tree of phone numbers we call in the event school is cancelled. The way our phone tree works, it branches out from the principal, and then each person calls the next on the list. As luck would have it, I was given my arch nemesis to call in the event of school being cancelled or delayed. This is the inclusion teacher for one of my classes, so therefore I have to spend one hour of every single day with this guy. I've actually blogged about his odd side job before, if you've forgotten, here it is.
So maybe he's not my "arch nemesis," but he isn't someone I would like to call on the phone. It kinda creeps me out that I have to keep his number in my phone for such an occasion to possibly occur.
But today when they were asking if anyone's numbers had changed since the summer, he was one that it had. So I promptly changed the number in my phone. But when he got to my room for class he was asking me if I got his new number and I was telling him that I did and had already changed it in my phone. I guess this one student overheard us.
Let me first say that this kid is in special education. So things might not be as clear to him as most students. For one, he calls this guy Mr. Mc________. When there really is no "Mc" to his name at all. We've just both embraced it and I've almost called him Mr. "Mc_____" because I am so used to it. I actually kinda think it's cute.
(The fact that he calls him that, not the teacher.)
Anyways, so this student came up to us and asked, "Mr. Mc_______, are you two married?"
I almost vomited. I mean, I know we were all giddy talking about probable snow and talking about exchanging phone numbers, BUT MARRIED????
So Mr. Mc______ (haha) explained to him that my last name was Jones and that was the biggest sign that we weren't married. He did further explain that we just worked together and that did not constitute marriage.
But wow. JUST WOW.
