Our next stop on the cruise was the Cayman Islands. From what I saw of this island it was absolutely beautiful and MUCH nicer than either of the other two islands! Would love to return and stay a while.
Due to reefs, the cruise ship cannot just pull up to a pier. So they have to shuttle you in a smaller boat to the pier.
We bought tickets for the "deluxe stingray" excursion long before our cruise. Before you can get to the stingrays they had to take you on a short bus ride and then our third boat ride for the day!
They take you to a place they call stingray city.
I'm not sure why it looks like if you go to Rum Point it takes you straight to hell, but I'll just remember to stay away from there from now on.
But you pull up to the sandbar and there's tons of other boats with people there. I did see the stingrays here featured on Jack Hanna's show recently as a place you should definitely go visit in your life time. Never mind why I was watching Saturday morning cartoons one day.
You can immediately see the stingrays swimming by...
The water there just looked unreal to me! Speaking of, the following pictures the water doesn't look the same because they were taken with Homann's underwater camera. Apparently you have to sacrifice picture color for the ability to take pictures/videos underwater!
At first everyone freaks out as they get used to the stingrays swimming around you. The only precaution they gave you was don't step on the stingrays. Here's a video Homann took when we first got out there:
Then, the "stingray whisperers" start everyone off with talking about the stingrays and letting everyone pet them.
You can see how committed I am to petting the stingray (hand on the right). Go, go, gadget arms???
Then you get brave and they let you hold the stingray, you have to let it sit on your chest. I did it, I just don't think there's a picture of it with me alone holding it because I lasted for all of 2 seconds holding the stingray...ick!
The stingray above is around 100 years old!!!
Here's another video, this time of Homann holding a stingray:
I hope you noticed how incredibly HOT the "whisperer" in that video was. He was actually the captain of the boat. He talked to us during our trip out to the sandbar and he told us that it was legend that if you kiss the stingray it brings you seven years good luck. But if you kiss the workers it's seven years bad luck (I'm thinking he's tired of ladies asking if they can kiss him instead, haha). But I considered the fact that if I kissed BOTH, they might cancel each other out and I'd be leaving with the same with luck as I was when I came but one very happy camper! I vetoed the idea and went with just the icky stingray instead...
And then they had stingray back massages...
And that's about all the stingray fun anyone can handle.
Back on the boat they sold the beer of the Cayman Islands, called Caybrew. I wouldn't normally share this picture, but after all the other awful pictures you just saw of me, why not?
(And I need a solid sweep of me holding a beer native to the area of each part of this trip.)
But there's a reason you never see that beer in the US (and that I didn't get another one to take another picture with one), it's not a good beer. Boo Caymans, bad job on the beer.
However, that's the only negative about your island. The Cayman's were beautiful and, like I said before, I'd love to go back sometime!
